6 Tips for Your First Hostel Experience

Hostel Tips

Hostels are a great choice of stay for those who want to make new friends abroad and save some money. It can also be a bit nerve-racking for your first time. To help your hostel experience, first check out this guide on how to pick a good hostel, and then check out the below tips for your first stay.

Earplugs/Sleeping Masks

I always take earplugs with me during my travels cause you never know if you’re going to be around snorers or loud noise outside the building. I’m a bit of an insomniac, so earplugs have come to my rescue a lot of nights when I’m sleeping in the same room with other people. Sleeping masks can be helpful as well if you deal with inconsiderate people who turn the lights on and off in the middle of the night. I recommend bringing these items in case you’re a light sleeper!

Choose the Right Room for you

You’re going to get options of rooms with 4 beds or with 16 beds, co-ed, not co-ed, and more. It’s necessary to understand what you can handle and what suits you, so that you don’t find yourself in an uncomfortable accommodation.

Bottom Bunk

Take the bottom bunk instead of the top bunk. At least that’s my opinion. It’s more convenient because you don’t have to climb up a bunch of stairs over someone else to get your stuff or to go to the bathroom. Bottom bunks are especially favorable if you know you’re going to have a late night out and you’re stumbling back to the hostel room a little tipsy. It’s just much easier to get to your bed! It’s also more convenient cause you can have your stuff right next to you when you need it.

Lock Up Your Valuables

Your passport, wallet, electronics, and other valuable items should be zipped away in your suitcase/backpack and locked up in the hostel locker. If you’re living with other people, it’s always possible that people can steal your stuff – so keep your goods safe!

Amenities Not Included

Hostels generally don’t provide amenities, so make sure you bring your own shampoo, conditioner, body wash, face wash, toothpaste, toothbrush, mouth wash, floss, and anything else you want to bring.
