Eurowings Airlines SMART Fare Review

eurowings review

After a month and 12 days in Bucharest, I flew with Eurowings airlines to Berlin, with a layover in Dusseldorf. I was a bit annoyed when purchasing this flight because their baggage restrictions are insane! I finally realized that when it comes to budget Europe airlines, you can’t even rag on RyanAir because other airlines can be much worse.

Baggage Restrictions

Baggage restrictions for RyanAir:

As of 8/25/16:
10kg, maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm,
-Plus 1 small bag up to 35 x 20 x 20 cm.

Baggage restrictions for EuroWings:

As of 8/25/16:
-8 kg, maximum dimensions of 55 x 40 x 23 cm. (excludes foldable garment bags as hand luggage, which may measure up to 57 x 54 x 15 cm.)

RyanAir essentially allows for 2 bags while EuroWings is less lenient. Unfortunately, many European budget airlines have EuroWings-type restrictions.

Since I had my backpack as well as my carry-on suitcase, I knew I would need to pay extra for checking in bags or having a bigger bag allowance. Rather than pay more at the airport, it’s better to add extra to your booking online.

Eurowings Extra Costs

The extra costs of Eurowings are:

  • Adding a bag to check in up to 23 kg – 15 Euros
  • Upgrading to SMART fare – Around 20 Euros (includes snack and drink, seating with extra leg room, check in for 1 bag up to 23 kg).

With these extra costs, I decided to purchase a ticket with the SMART fare, which brought my price up 102 Euros. It was expensive considering the September one-way fares were only around 10 Euros or less!

Flight Experience

Having the SMART fare was quite nice. When you walk in you’ll see some seats as “preferred” and some with “BEST” on them. I was able to sit in the third row for my first flight to Dusseldorf:

As you can see there was ample leg room, and the seats were extremely comfortable.

The middle seat wasn’t occupied so I moved my stuff to the seat over. The blanket is mine and wasn’t included 😛

An hour into the flight, the carts came out and we were asked if we wanted a cheese or salami sandwich. Those are the only choices you really get (my second flight from Dusseldorf to Berlin had the same foods). Once you choose, you’re given a bag with the sandwich, snack, and water:

The salami sandwich was literally prepackaged bread, salami, and mustard. It was mediocre, but you can’t really expect much!

Afterwards you’re able to get another (non-alcoholic) drink. Alcoholic drinks cost an additional fee. So I just got orange juice:

My two flights were quick and painless, and I have to say the added amenities helped! The Eurowings restrictions bugged me, but once you get past that, the ride is smooth sailing.
